Hobart anytime — a base, not a checklist
Don't rush Hobart from one must-see to the next. Stay somewhere central and dip into these places whenever there's a gap, on foot or on Tasmania's fare-free buses. What's on which day, where to go in the rain, what's free and what needs booking.

A lot of visitors arrive in Hobart with a list of must-see spots, rush between them, and leave knowing very little about the city they slept in.
This page is for doing it the other way. Treat Hobart as a base: stay somewhere central, and dip into these places whenever there's a gap. It isn't a schedule. It's what's on which day, where to go when it rains, what's free, and what you need to book.
Most of it is a walk away. The rest is a bus ride, and the buses cost nothing: Tasmania's public transport is fare-free until 30 June 2027.
Walking times are from YHA Hobart Central, 9 Argyle St, where we stayed, a few minutes from the waterfront. Hours and prices were checked on 25 September 2026 against each place's own page or a named listing, unless marked "not checked". Things change, so check before you go. Tap a name for directions.

If you can, start with TMAG. Seeing the island's own museum first makes everything after it make more sense: the Female Factory, Port Arthur, even the whalers of the east coast.

Safety
On 28 September, back in town after a day on the mountain, a group of teenagers threw lollies at us, twice, including outside Centrepoint, 70 Murray St, at about 4:45 pm. Nobody was hurt. We walked up to the Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre and reported it.
So if you're visiting, don't walk around alone, and be alert near groups of teenagers, especially in the late afternoon around the Murray Street shops.
- Non-emergency — Tasmania Police, 131 444
